I love smart marketers and I love data. Real numbers, A & B testing, metrics.
With data we can analyze, then tweak and repeat. Seeing what is working its magic, and understanding why it’s working is a superpower.
My good friend and brilliant copywriter Jon Maxim recently shared a brilliant article with me. I am happy to share the full article with you, but here is a summary.
I hope by the end of this post most of you rush to buy post-it notes, and cards and start collecting postal addresses.
Did you know that one of the best ways to get someone to comply with your request is through a tiny nuance that adds a personal touch -attaching a sticky note?
Simply adding a sticky note double the response rate. Yes, DOUBLE.
A brilliant set of experiments by Randy Garner at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville found that:
- adding a personal touch, and
- making someone feel like you’re asking a favour of them (and not just anyone) can bring about impressive results when done in tandem.
More people who received a task with personal sticky notes replied as well as replied faster.
The real magic, it seems, is not the sticky note itself, but the sense of connection, meaning, and identity that the sticky note represents. In today’s busy digital world, 5-sense marketing using real products can definitely help you cut through the noise.
How can you add the magic of personal touch to your business?
